This particular saying applies mainly to business owners. Those of us ambitiousness enough to start a business are also the type that have a high level of responsibility. We feel responsible for everything and to everyone, especially our clients. So we wear all the hats, make sure that all of the i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed. We handle the sticky customer service issues. We do everything that isn’t someone else’s job, while doing all of things that are our job too. Meanwhile life marches on and the one thing that we all have in limited supply is time. Business ownership or a particular demanding job shouldn’t rob you of your time. Soon the end will be here and you will have missed your time.
Retire a little bit every day
I was reminded of this phrase the other day when I saw a post in a Facebook group aimed at IT business owners asking if anyone puts their business over their health. The answers were mainly yes. In addition to time, health is another thing that we have a limited supply of. Fortunately giving yourself more time can also give you more health.
My phrase for this is retire a little bit every day. We all hope to retire someday. That mythical day when we don’t have to work anymore and we can do what ever we decide we want to do that day. Just like a kid on summer break. No money worries. Just a life of leisure. Gone fishing. Out to play. Very few people actually make it there and the reason they don’t is because they didn’t pay attention to the time. Time slipped away and health slipped away.
Instead of that one big retirement, retire a little bit every day. Go do something fun every day. It’s doesn’t have to be a big thing. It’s the small things that matter. Go out to lunch with a friend. Visit a relative. Go on a bike ride. Take a walk. Spend a few minutes in the garden. Sit down a read something that’s not technical. Go see a movie. Visit a museum. Take a friend, a date, a partner or a neighbor. Just do it. Relax and retire a little bit every day.
You can do this at the beginning of the day, at the end of day, or in the middle of the day. It’s doesn’t matter when you do it, it just matters that you do.
